Beach cleanup 2023

On a bright Saturday in Kostrena, Back to Blu hosted another community-driven beach cleanup as part of World Cleanup Day, one of the world’s largest civic movements for a cleaner planet.

Working together for cleaner shores

Our partners from the shipping industry joined the effort alongside dozens of local volunteers. Together, we focused not only on clearing litter but on raising awareness of the growing impact of marine pollution and the importance of everyday responsibility in protecting our seas.

Small items, big impact

This year’s clean-up targeted one of the most overlooked but harmful pollutants: cigarette butts. Though small in size, they contain plastics and chemicals that take over a decade to break down, leaching toxins into the water and turning into microplastics that threaten marine life. Removing them is a simple yet vital act of care for our coastline.

Beyond the beach

Volunteers also extended their efforts to the nearby Sailing Club Galeb, clearing debris and waste from the surrounding area to ensure a cleaner, safer environment for both sea and shore.

Community spirit in action

All participants received Back to Blu T-shirts and shared a relaxed barbecue organised by the Liburnia team: a small celebration of collective effort and shared purpose.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who joined us. Each cleanup brings us closer to the world we believe in – one where small actions add up to lasting change.
